Any type of adventure is always high on my list of things to do. Birthday week rolled around and Ten asked me what I wanted to do. I paused for a bit, then proclaimed that I wanted a day at the beach. The coast is a two and a half hour drive from here, definitely doable for a day trip. The beach didn’t work out, but the next adventure on my list did. Shuffleboard!
Durham is fantastic for many reasons, but shuffleboard is not one of them. We packed up the car and headed to Pinehurst, NC, about an hour away. We found our way to Rassie Wicker Park, a quiet little park nestled among most of the public buildings of Pinehurst. On this particular day there was a Pickle Ball Tournament on the tennis courts which is right next to the two shuffleboard courts.
The courts were in semi-decent shape, but no glass beads to facilitate a smooth glide, so we waxed the bottom of our discs to help them down the court. We played ‘first to seventy-five’, though there were scoreboards, the chalk was sadly absent. Being a little spoiled, having learned to play at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, the condition of the courts were less than ideal, but manageable for a friendly game.
FYI: Southern Pines, not too far from Pinehurst, has courts that were under renovation during our visit. Word on the street is that Pinehurst is next on the schedule for renovation.
What you need to know:
What to bring. If you own your own tang and biscuit (cue and discs), great. If you don’t, you can check a set out at the Village Hall (395 Magnolia Road, Pinehurst, NC), a short walk from the courts. Bring some wax to add a little glide to the discs and chalk to keep score.
Parking. There is plenty of parking around the park.
Facilities. Public restrooms are available on the other side of the park and I do believe there was a water fountain there as well.
